Living in New York, it is an incredible stroke of luck to have access to outdoor space. It’s not uncommon for people to select apartments merely for their proximity to parks, or because of their shared rooftop access. But, the crème de la crème? Private outdoor space, in the form of a balcony, patio, or terrace.

From day one, this beloved private terrace could not have been loved more. It has been fully taken advantage of since moving into the space—helping to store necessities (trading outdoor space for a storage closet was a toss-up, but one that was absolutely worth it), acting as another room when hosting gatherings, and providing many an escape for fresh air.

However, in all that it has remained essentially the same, that is, relatively gray and unaltered since move-in. With summer upon us, it felt like the perfect time for the space to reach it’s true and fullest potential of becoming a true outdoor oasis. As we’ve expressed time and time again, one of the easiest ways to infuse freshness into a space is through color. So, for this project, we chose to go bright with our friends at Fabric.com. Selecting an array of outdoor fabrics from the brand in vibrant patterns, summer-y corals, and of course On Sunday greens, we set to work constructing the outdoor cushions that would make this space come to life.

Beyond these three lovely fabrics, all this project required was a bit of determination, a touch of sewing, and some rearranging of the pace. Tropical vibes intensified with the addition of a bamboo privacy wall, and a handful of plants, and of course a summer spritz. By bringing out a few key pieces of furniture, namely this cozy, low to the ground lounger and a side table for snacks and drinks, we were able to transform the bare-bones of this balcony into a small but mighty oasis.

If you’re looking to revamp your own outdoor space in a way that you can immediately enjoy, all the fabrics we used are linked above to their respective swatches. Happy lounging!
