OS Beach Bag Essentials

As far as we’re concerned, Summer = Beach. If you haven’t made a trip to the ocean yet, this is your friendly reminder that your summer cannot officially begin until you’ve done so and time. is. dwindling. Whether you’re coastal, or landlocked and making it a point to visit the water, having a well-stocked beach bag is the only way to ensure that your foray by the sea runs as smooth as possible. We’ve put together a list of our favorite beach bag essentials so that you can spend less time packing and more time showing off your beach bod.

A Bangin’ Beach Playlist
To be honest, the interpretation of “bangin'” is very objective. Maybe to you banging translates to a playlist compiled exclusively of old school R&B, or maybe it sounds more like dance remixes of Taylor Swift’s greatest hits. To us, bangin’ can be succinctly defined as our July playlist, which you can listen to here.

Sun Bum & Sun Bum SPF Lip Balm
Friends don’t let friends skip sunscreen, and Sun Bum is the only sunscreen we’ve found that is pleasant enough that we want to put it on. Also, since we’re all friends here, let’s hold each other accountable for reapplication, okay? If you’re going to be spending prolonged amounts of time in the sun, it’s also a good idea to pack an SPF lip balm because a lip sunburn is truly something nobody should ever have to endure.

Sunglasses
We’re huge proponents of eye protection here at OS, and while we love a good pair of designer sunnies we’ve lost far too many pairs to unexpectedly brutal riptides. Pick up an inexpensive pair of beach-only sunglasses (preferably ones that block 99-100% of UV & UVB rays) to prevent having to mourn the loss of your favorite expensive pair.

Apolis Standard Market Tote
Beach bags come in all shapes and sizes, but if you don’t already have a go-to, we’d suggest an Apolis Standard Market Tote. Not only is this tote roomy and structured, it’s also ethically produced, waterproof, and able to hold up to 135 lbs worth of seaside essentials.

A Good Book
The best beach reads are the ones that are so immersive you almost forget to reapply sunscreen–but again, DON’T forget to reapply sunscreen. Check out last week’s OS Summer Reading List for our top recs.

Fresh Fruit
Fruit is hands down the essential beach snack, and you will never be able to change our minds. Grapes, watermelon, berries, sliced pineapple–really anything that tickles your fancy. Just try to avoid fruit that cannot be eaten whole. The less trash the better!

A Fluffy Towel
Obviously if you plan on dipping in the ocean, you’ll need to pack a towel. The best beach towels are large, fluffy, and quick drying–just like our favorite pick from Cleverly Laundry.

EVA Birkenstocks
The idea of plastic shoes probably immediately conjures thoughts of 90’s jellies, unironically worn Crocs, or cheap, blister-inducing flip flops. While those will forever hold a place in our hearts, of late our beach footwear choice is EVA Birkenstocks. They’re inexpensive, come in tons of fun colors, are as comfortable as traditional Birks, and basically repel all sand (which is really the only selling point that truly matters).
